Shell has been active in Nigeria for decades, and this activity has led to significant environmental damage in Nigeria. Shell's operations in Nigeria have faced resistance for many years, not only from the local population but also from groups in the Netherlands opposing Shell's activities in Nigeria. In 2021, after a 13-year legal battle, the company was ordered to pay compensation to a group of Nigerian farmers, setting an unprecedented legal precedent. In this episode of VICE's long-running series Toxic, we tell the story of this lawsuit through the eyes of human rights lawyer Channa Samkalden.
